Greatness lies within each of us. Those who work daily on unearthing this greatness are the people who become successful in life. These are the people who ask, “How can I?” instead of saying “I wish I could.” Developing a skill pushes you outside of your comfort zone. It’s more than raw talent…it’s a determination to excel. Traditional education does very little to truly develop each of our unique skills. Therefore, it is important for us to develop the mindset of a continuous learner throughout our lives. New skills can give you a competitive edge and bolster your success journey. This article seeks to challenge you to acquire new skills by explaining how they will benefit you.
Passion is a word that is used so loosely. Thought leaders encourage us to follow our passions so that we never have to truly work a day in our lives. However, I don’t view passion solely as discovering something that you like to do. I view it as a burning desire; something that makes you restless if not fed. It is a desire from deep within that forces you to want to becoming better than you were before. Some of us have a passion for music and art, others have a passion for community service. The list of possibilities is endless.
Many of us aren’t in careers that relate to our passions. This is partly due to the fact that we either haven’t done some introspection to discover our true calling, or we haven’t done the work necessary to acquire the skills needed. Think about that natural talent you have that puts a smile on your face and makes you feel at ease. What new skills do you need to acquire to allow this talent to grow? The more you feed your passion is the more alive you’ll feel. You’ll be living in your purpose and walking towards your destiny.
Building a Network
People who love what they do are magnetic. The excitement that bubbles within them is infectious. The more skills you acquire, the more people you’ll attract. You’ll be able to build a network of people who are interested in the same things that you are. You can support each other and probably forge beneficial partnerships. Get out there, learn the skills you need, and put them to work. People will recognize your gift and encourage your growth.
Over the past decade there has been a tremendous push for a culture of entrepreneurship to develop globally. Despite this shift, the Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM) reported that the most entrepreneurial country, Uganda, only has 28.1% of its population being entrepreneurs. The United States, which ranked 41st on the GEM’s list of the most entrepreneurial countries in the world, only had 4.3% of the adult population being entrepreneurs. Let’s face it, entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. However, acquiring new skills can help you develop a successful freelancing career.
Many freelancers use their freelancing as a side gig instead of a full-time career. Some have been able to launch into a freelancer career full-time. The freelancer economy is booming globally. In 2014, online freelance marketplaces such as Upwork helped freelancers generate more than a trillion dollars in total revenue. You can’t let the opportunity to tap into this mega industry slip you by. Acquiring a new skill can help you launch your freelancer career.
Learning a new skill helps you become the better than you were before. You fuel your true passion, build a network, and become independent. Now that you’re excited to learn something new, use one or a combination of the following tips to help you get started.
Tip #1: Sign Up for a Short Course
Training institutes are a dime a dozen. Chances are there is one in your area that offers training in a skill that piques your interest. Do a simple Google search for more information. Short courses typically are affordable and provide the basics you need.
Tip #2: Check Out Online Websites
Several e-learning websites exist. The courses they offer are generally free, but some attract a minimal fee. Some of the leading e-learning websites include: Udemy, edX, Coursera, Khan Academy and TedEd. Do some research to find the course that works for you.
The choice is yours. Developing a skill requires determination and the willingness to invest. I think Mohammed Ali sums this point up perfectly in the following quote.
Choose to be a champion.
